The Media Council of Kenya being both a regulator and a media development agency runs various programmes that help in the development of a responsible media and responsible consumption of media content.

At the core of our intervention to create a responsible consumption of media content, the Council runs a very robust Media and Information Literacy (MIL) program across the country. The MIL program adopted and domesticated the UNESCO approach- who have taken the lead by producing various media and information literacy guidelines- and customized into the Kenyan situation.

The Council runs two days MIL forums/training sessions targeting journalists, the youth, students, media practitioners, national and county government officers, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations

The competencies acquired through MIL help equip citizens with critical thinking skills enabling them to demand high-quality services from media and other information providers. Collectively, they foster an enabling environment in which media and other information providers can provide quality services

The MIL forums are aimed at helping citizens

  • Understand the role and functions of media and other information providers in democratic societies.
  • Critically evaluate information and the content of media and other information providers, including those on the Internet in terms of authority, credibility and current purpose.
  • Recognise and articulate a need for information.
  • Locate and access relevant information.
