 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

UNESCO collaborates with the Media Council of Kenya on a number of meetings meant to enhanec the capacity of media practitioners, including the World Press Freedom Day celebrations held annually on 3rd May.








 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

The Media Council of Kenya in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducts the Communications for Development Programme. The programme aims at improving the journalists’ professional skills on development reporting.

UNESCO also supported the 1st  Annual Media Council of Kenya Journalists’ Media Awards that endeavors to identify, acknowledge, inspire, support and promote media excellence in Kenya.

GIZ


 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbei

MCK is cooperating with GIZ, the German Development Cooperation. As part of this partnership, a technical adviser by the German Civil Peace Service and GIZ is assisting MCK in the field of media monitoring and journalism training.

Aims of the cooperation

  • Support the reconciliation and cohesion process through strengthening the role of media
  • Train media houses and journalists on code of conduct, conflict sensitive reporting and responsible election coverage
  • Provide continuous information on media performance in Kenya

Activities conducted in 2011

  • Setting up of a Media Monitoring Department (5 people)
  • Training of Media Monitors
  • Continuous monitoring of the adherence of Kenyan media to the code of conduct
  • Pilot Project: Monitoring of vernacular radio stations
  • Monitoring of war coverage

Current Activities

  • Set up of a computer based monitoring system and a digital archive for print, online and broadcast media
  • Update of election coverage guidelines and training manual
  • Update of election monitoring tools
  • Design and implementation of training workshops on election coverage and conflict sensitive reporting

 Ford Foundation

Ford Foundation

The Ford Foundation supports the following activities of the Media Council of Kenya:

  • Research and documentation: For the last two years, the Media Council of Kenya with assistance from the Ford Foundation, has been carrying out a project aimed at informing the media about issues that affect the media profession in Kenya and regionally. Specifically, this has been achieved through the publication of a professional quarterly magazine entitled “The Media Observer”. Research into media trends is done and published in the magazine.
     
  • Publication of Media Regulation Book: Pursuant to the networking and sharing of experiences with regional Media Councils, Ford Foundation has supported the publication of a book on Media Regulation in East Africa. The book is titled 'the long walk to media freedom'.
     
  • Regional forums; study tours and bi-annual meetings of the regional councils to identify emerging issues and share workable strategies and solutions.
     
  • Organisation of an annual awards scheme for journalists.
